Tell me what you want, what you really, really want...

Hi!

Yes I know we’re not due another newsletter until next week, but I have a long blog post for you, a new podcast episode, and a question, so why wait? Let’s start with the question… (with apologies to the Spice Girls for the terrible subject line)

What do you want?

I’m thinking about what I produced over the last year. It wasn’t the publishing explosion of 2024, but I did produce two full length courses (Vadi Longsword and Vadi Dagger), created the Introduction to Historical Martial Arts course, and published one book (From Medieval Manuscript to Modern Practice: the dagger techniques of Fiore dei Liberi). I’ve also posted 17 blog posts- about double what I thought I’d done, but I just counted them so I’m sure.

That’s a pretty good year, to be honest. And sales haven’t been too bad. But it must be said that my overall sales are down relative to 2024. Some of that is no doubt due to the prevailing economic conditions (so much winningness, really). But looking around I see other authors having 6-figure crowdfunding campaigns, or shifting a million books (literally). People are dropping significant cash on their interests.

So, imagine you had pots of money (a stretch, I know), and you could commission me to produce any book or online course, just for you. What would that be? Reply to this email to let me know.

I’m not promising I’ll produce it (unless you really do have all the cash, and it’s within my area of expertise, and it’s in line with my values). But I would be really interested to know what would be a slam-dunk obvious purchase for you. Be as detailed, and whimsical, as you like.

(Got to work on that marketing).

100 days no booze results

Last week I shared a DEXA mystery, and some of my 100 days no booze results. I’ve now written the whole thing up, including ALL the data, and the resolution of the missing 1.616kg. After a long chat with one of the company’s DEXA technicians, it seems there’s a simple explanation. You can read the whole thing here.

Guy Windsor's Swordschool

Dr. Guy Windsor is a world-renowned instructor and a pioneering researcher of medieval and renaissance martial arts. He has been teaching the Art of Arms full-time since founding The School of European Swordsmanship in Helsinki, Finland, in 2001. His day job is finding and analysing historical swordsmanship treatises, figuring out the systems they represent, creating a syllabus from the treatises for his students to train with, and teaching the system to his students all over the world. Guy is the author of numerous classic books about the art of swordsmanship and has consulted on swordfighting game design and stage combat. He developed the card game, Audatia, based on Fiore dei Liberi's Art of Arms, his primary field of study. In 2018 Edinburgh University awarded him a PhD by Research Publications for his work recreating historical combat systems. When not studying medieval and renaissance swordsmanship or writing books Guy can be found in his shed woodworking or spending time with his family.

A Gathering of Wolves

BOOKS PODCAST COURSES COMMUNITY BLOG Hi! The Gathering of Wolves, in Cardiff last weekend, was a delight. It’s my first event in the UK for a decade (which is weird, right? I’ve literally attended more events in New Zealand than in the UK since I moved here). I taught two classes- one on I.33 sword and buckler, the other on Fiore’s zogho largo/zogho stretto distinction, and gave a lecture on solo training. They were all very well attended (about 40 students in each, I think), and each and...

Guy's translation of Vadi laid out like the original

Hi! On March 17th 2001 I ran the first official class of what was then called “The School of European Swordsmanship, Helsinki”, or SESH, in a small room at the Olympic Stadium, in Helsinki, Finland. So today is our 25th birthday: happy birthday to us! Our classes were held in primary school sports halls: Training in Töölön Ala-aste koulu, 2001 And even outside, when the Finnish weather allowed: Training in Sibelius Park, Helsinki, May 2001 It's fair to say we've come a long way since then! To...

St George's Church London

BOOKS PODCAST COURSES COMMUNITY BLOG Hi! I have two mysteries for you this week. First up, what is this? Hint: they come in pairs. The joint, in case you’re interested, is a wedged through-tenon. Not my favourite joint to cut, but this one came out ok. And secondly, this is the St. George Church in Hanover Square, London. Why, as historical martial artists, should we care? Answers by replying to this email… I’ll reveal them in a couple of weeks. I spent a day last week with my friend Sergio...
